There are many reasons why people choose to volunteer. For some, it offers the chance to give back to the community, start new friendships and make a difference to people around them. For others, volunteering opens up opportunities to share skills and experience and to even develop avenues for mentoring.
Each day, volunteers from all over the Sunshine Coast meet at the Maroochydore Community Centre to help with a variety of roles. These include kitchen duties and meal delivery for the Suncare Meals on Wheels team, helping in the centre with the senior’s daily entertainment, or providing care and support to customers during social outings and activities.
Volunteering can also lead to new experiences. During a recent marketing campaign, the opportunity arose for volunteers to step into the limelight and star in a collection of television commercials and news stories for Suncare. Over several days, three volunteers braved the early mornings and long evenings with the film producers and Suncare staff to give their best performance.
Meals on Wheels volunteer Lynn was involved in one of the commercials filmed at Maleny Dairies. Her involvement took her up to the hinterland with the camera crew in tow and concluded with some afternoon tea whilst the sun set over the Maleny hills. Maroochydore Community Centre volunteer Margaret had an early start to catch the best light along Mooloolaba Beach. The weather had been unpredictable, but the producer managed to capture Margaret enjoying a sunny beach walk despite threatening grey clouds above. To watch Margaret in action please click here.
Administration volunteer Cathy was featured on Channel 7News’ Local Hero segment. She was nominated by Suncare for this segment due to the great work and dedication Cathy brings to the team. Her varied role spans from admin duties to meal delivery, and many jobs in between. To watch Cathy’s story please click here.
Cathy, Lynn and Margaret are just three of the 200+ dedicated volunteers who give their time and expertise to the Sunshine Coast community. The volunteers work over five areas:
- Community Visitors Scheme
- Community transport
- Maroochydore Day Respite Centre
- Meals on Wheels kitchen
- Meals on Wheels delivery driver
Plus there are many different opportunities for volunteers to be involved in these areas.
During National Volunteers Week May 20-26, Suncare is holding a celebration to acknowledge these volunteers. On Wednesday, May 22 the Maroochydore Community Hall will be a hub of live entertainment, high tea and prizes.
More information about volunteering at Suncare can be found on our website here.
