As you become more tech-savvy and start exploring the internet from the comfort of your home, you may start to realise how much information is available on the internet.
While it’s great to have vast amounts of information available via your computer, iPad/tablet or smartphone – it can be overwhelming.
Our internet searching tips for seniors can help give you the confidence to find what you are looking for more easily.
Google is a search engine designed to help you find information on the internet. It’s one of the easiest search engines to use. This search engine offers a number of options to help you get the answers you are looking for. For example, if you’re searching for directions to the nearest supermarket or wanting to watch a video on how to cross-stitch, ask Google.
How to search on Google
1. From your desktop click on and open your internet web browser.
2. Type www.google.com in the search bar and press enter.
3. To search for a product or service in Google, type in your request. For example, hairdressers in Gympie into the search box then, click the Google search button or press enter. A number of results will appear on your screen. When you click on one of the links, you will be directed to a webpage with relevant information from your search term.
How to get reliable results
When you conduct a Google search, it is best to avoid words like; ‘I’ ‘it’ ‘the’ ‘a’, as almost every website contains these words. Try to be specific, for example, if you’re searching for a recipe such as ‘raspberry muffins,’ thousands of results will appear. If you add a specific ingredient for example ‘raspberry and white chocolate muffins’ the search will narrow the results.
Google also has dedicated sections for Images, News, Maps, Shopping, Videos, Books, Flights and Language Translation. These dedicated sections can help you find exactly what you are looking for. For example, if you are looking for a specific book, you can type the title in the Google Search Bar and when the search results come up, click the Books Tab to narrow your search results to include only books.
No matter what you’re searching for, Google will be able to help.
