Walking is a great way to improve your health and just 30 minutes a day can help to improve your overall wellbeing. 

Walking doesn’t have to be strenuous, in fact, it’s a very low-impact activity that is completely free, requires no equipment and can be performed whenever and wherever you like.  

Walking is great for any age. It can boost confidence, and get you out of the house to enjoy fresh air, warm sunshine and a chat with people in the neighbourhood. The list of benefits of walking is endless including these health outcomes:

  • Reduced risk of heart disease and stroke; 

  • Improved management of illness and conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, joint and muscular stiffness and diabetes;

Some simple tips to build walking into your routine include: 

  • Walking to your local newsagency, supermarket, post office or appointment; 

  • Getting off public transport one stop earlier; 

  • Walking your dog or a neighbour’s dog; 

  • Bringing along a friend or family member and chatting as you walk - the time will fly by;  

  • Creating your own walking tracks around your local area. Mix it up by challenging yourself to a hill or increase your pace for a short distance then return to your normal pace, then repeat a couple of times.  

Walking isn’t a limiting form of exercise, it can be enjoyable and social. When you walk regularly you will gradually build your strength and endurance that can assist in losing weight. The expression – a walk a day will keep the doctor away – may very well be true! So, start scheduling regular walks into your weekly routine.
