What is Cottage Respite
The Cottage Respite Program aims to take the stress out of organising respite by providing personalised services without the need for ACAT assessments.
The Cottage Respite Program is available to primary Carers of frail older Australians, including people with dementia and challenging behaviours, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds (CALD), people from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds (ATSI), people who are financially disadvantaged, and people living in rural and remote locations.
Cottage Respite allows Carers to take a short break from their caring role with cottage stays providing overnight or short stays (up to 6 nights).
Our Cottage guests enjoy the benefit of a short stay in a comfortable ‘home away from home’ environment, while their care needs and support are provided by our qualified and experienced staff. The Cottage Respite Program is flexible and works to meet the needs of both the Carer and the person they care for.
The Cottage Respite Program aims to provide individualised care appropriate to the needs of each individual. In order to accurately meet each individual’s needs an assessment is completed prior to booking the respite stay to ensure we can offer the appropriate care needs, and a safe and stimulating environment. The program also offers emergency response accommodation (where appropriate), can provide for couples to stay overnight thereby meeting the emotional need of the couple not to be separated, and continuity of care from the individual’s routines at home to the cottage environment.
The Cottage staff are educated in a range of mandatory areas including certificate III in a human services field (i.e. aged care, disabilities) manual handling, medication administration, first aid, CPR, and workplace health and safety, as well as cultural awareness training. Many find it comforting to know that qualified staff are on hand 24 hours a day to assist their loved one when needed.
All of the Cottage Respite Program houses and locations are available for viewing by appointment to ensure both the carer and the person they care for are comfortable with the cottage environment.
What is Cottage Respite and who is it for?
Overnight Respite in Community “Cottage” Respite Houses is an Australian Government initiative funded under the National Respite for Carers Program targeting:
- Primary Carers Primary Carers of frail aged people, people with dementia and/or challenging behaviour, frail aged persons over 65 years (or over 50 if Indigenous) and younger people with moderate to severe disabilities who are living at home.
- Special Needs Groups As a number of special needs groups of people often have difficulty accessing appropriate respite care the Cottage Respite Program identifies special needs groups as being carers of people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds (CALD), Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds (ATSI), people who are financially disadvantaged, and people living in rural and remote locations. Cottage Respite aims to provide respite care that is appropriate to the respite care needs of people from these special needs groups, and provide respite workers with appropriate cultural awareness training and must be responsive to the assessed needs of the care recipient, including being appropriate to care needs, and providing a safe and stimulating environment.
- Carers looking for Flexible, Short Term Respite options The Cottage Respite Program provides for overnight or short stays, allowing carers short and flexible respite breaks. We can offer options to Carers for planned “day and night” respite care for their loved ones. This is most appreciated by carers who need a break but don’t want to use a Residential Aged Care facility, Carers who need a holiday, Carers who want to travel interstate to visit family or friends or they themselves need admission to hospital.
What will it cost?
There is a nominated contribution amount per night which varies between each cottage facility. Payment details can be discussed with the booking officer at time of booking. No one will be declined services due to inability to make a contribution. All Carers and Care Recipients will be treated with the utmost respect, dignity and confidentiality. Additional costs may be incurred if transportation is required.
