Walking for reconciliation

Suncare and the Sunshine Coast Reconciliation Group recently hosted an event at Cotton Tree Park as part of the 3km Reconciliation Coastal Walk along Alexandra Headland.

Uniting Care Community, the North Coast Aboriginal Corporation for Community Health and Life Without Barriers also joined the event, with stalls along the park overlooking the river, while the Lions Club of Lake Currimundi supplied a delicious sausage sizzle which tempted the attendees.

Brent Miller, who performed the Welcome to Country, spoke about the Gubbi Gubbi people, the Traditional Owners who have cared for the land for over 18,000 years. A group of performing artists also showcased traditional Aboriginal arts through Gubbi Gubbi song and dance, inviting the crowd to participate.

Guest speakers included Division 8 Cr Jason O’Pray, Suncare’s Chief Operations Manager Richard Johnson and CEO Russell Mason, and Reconciliation Queensland Co-Chair Peter Jackson.

National Reconciliation Week runs annually from 27 May - 3 June. These dates mark two milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey: The 1967 referendum and the historic Mabo decision, respectively.
