Direct Respite Services receives Commonwealth funding from the Department of Health & Ageing to provide a range of flexible, responsive services to meet the needs of carers and their care recipients.
We are committed to providing quality respite care and services to assist people who are frail aged or who may have a disability. We can provide effective support to people to remain living in the comfort of their own home and community.
Direct Respite Services is a service delivery arm of Suncare Community Services Inc. and a not for profit organisation. All proceeds go back into developing and providing more services and opportunities within our community.
Direct Respite Services staff are fully qualified in aged care or disability care. Professional development and training are continually reviewed to ensure currency and competency.
Direct Respite Services field staff have an established high level of service standards and consequently are brokered by many community based organisations as requested to provide respite, personal care and domestic assistance and home and garden maintenance demonstrating the Organisation’s flexibility and professionalism within the broader community services sector.
The target groups to which respite can be provided consist of:
- People with dementia
- Dementia and challenging behaviour
- Frail older Australians
- Younger people with moderate, severe or profound disabilities who are living at home

Strategic Initiative
As part of Suncare’s regional services, Direct Respite Services has this specific strategic initiative:
Our service has a solution focused commitment to achieving positive outcomes through innovation, flexibility and mutual understanding in developing quality services that are responsive to the identified needs of our clients and the community.
The philosophy of The National Respite for Carers Program is:
“To advocate, co-ordinate and improve assistance for carers, while making respite accessible and responsive to the carers’ needs and the right of individuals to be self-determining, when they require ‘time out’ from their carer role.”
This program provides a mix of flexible respite care services to meet individual needs of carers and the needs of the person they care for. The target group for these direct services is carers of people who are frail aged with significant care needs, or carers of people of any age who have a physical or mental disability, terminal or long-term illness or dementia.
